Case study · Store Network

Creating the UK's first carrier-neutral Out-of-Home store network.

NetDespatch helped launch the UK's first carrier-neutral Out-of-Home parcel shop network by delivering the operational platform, store workflows and carrier connectivity needed to support returns first, then scale collections and store-to-store delivery.

First

carrier-neutral UK OOH store network

17+ years

operated, supported and evolved

Thousands

of stores enabled as parcel service points

At a time when failed home delivery and missed collections were creating friction across retail and carrier operations, the proposition introduced a new Out-of-Home network model for the UK parcels market.

NetDespatch helped explore, validate and shape the service model, then implemented and operated the platform required to launch returns first and scale into collections and store-to-store delivery.

The idea

Make local stores part of the parcel network, without forcing carriers, retailers or consumers into a single closed ecosystem.

Key outcomes

A new Out-of-Home model, proven in operation.

The platform became the operational backbone for a national store network, connecting parcel events, store workflows, carrier processes and recipient communications.

The UK's first large-scale carrier-neutral Out-of-Home store network.

Thousands of convenience stores enabled as parcel service points.

One platform connecting carriers, retailers, stores and consumers.

A critical event backbone supporting store operations, carrier processes and recipient notifications.

A scalable service launched on time and within budget.

Platform operated, supported and evolved by NetDespatch for 17+ years.

The foundation for today's Velocity OOH platform.

The challenge

Creating a new national parcel shop model from the ground up.

The client needed to validate and launch a completely new parcel service model, with no existing blueprint to follow. A new platform was required to connect retailers, carriers, stores, consumers and technology infrastructure to provide a consistent, reliable and scalable solution.

The challenge was both operational and technical. Existing carrier and retailer systems could not be changed, store processes had to be simple enough for real-world convenience store environments, and the solution needed to support high-volume parcel traffic from pioneering eCommerce brands.

The solution had to orchestrate the parcel lifecycle from retailer request through to store processing, carrier handover, delivery and recipient notification.

Connecting the Ecosystem

One operational platform connecting carriers, retailers, stores and consumers across the parcel journey.

The solution

From concept validation to operational platform.

Using the NetDespatch innovation lifecycle, the concept was progressed from service design through to a live Out-of-Home platform, combining proven parcel technology with dedicated store network capability.

01

Explore

Mapped end-to-end journeys across consumers, stores, retailers and carriers to expose touchpoints, dependencies and data flows.

02

Validate

Defined store processes, carrier interactions, parcel events, exception handling and customer notifications.

03

Prove

Reduced risk by launching first as a returns pilot and proving demand, usability and operational feasibility.

04

Operationalise

Moved into a controlled live service that could support high-volume parcel traffic and real store operations.

05

Commercialise

Built, operated and evolved the platform for long-term scale, including later cloud migration with zero downtime.

Core platform role

Velocity provided the operational backbone.

The core Velocity platform provided high-volume shipment interfaces, carrier orchestration and parcel management. Dedicated store network and Out-of-Home functionality covered labels, tracking, store workflows, event feeds and reporting. Continuous testing and zero-downtime deployment enabled rapid iteration once the service was live.

The results

A long-running platform for modern Out-of-Home delivery.

The service became the UK's first large-scale carrier-neutral Out-of-Home store network, giving consumers broader access to parcel services through local stores with extended opening hours.

NetDespatch turned the original service concept into a scalable operational platform by combining proven Velocity capability with dedicated Out-of-Home workflows, event handling and carrier connectivity.

The platform supported parcel returns, collections and store-based fulfilment services for major retail and eCommerce delivery flows, including early returns programmes for brands such as ASOS, Very, Littlewoods, John Lewis and Boohoo, and later high-growth consumer platforms such as Vinted.

More than 17 years later, NetDespatch continues to operate, support and evolve the platform services behind this model, providing the foundation for today's Velocity OOH capability.
